Coeur d'Alene girls nab fourth straight region title

MOSCOW - Almost perfect will do for now.

Sophomore Emily Callahan led the Coeur d'Alene Vikings with a win in 20 minutes, 51 seconds in the girls race at the 5A Region 1 meet on Thursday at Phillips Farm.

It was Coeur d'Alene's fourth straight regional title. The Vikings were aiming for a third straight perfect score, but a third-place finish by Shevaun Ames of Lewiston kept that from happening.

"It was a tough course," Coeur d'Alene coach Cathy Compton said. "It was a true cross country course and challenging for everyone. The girls battled well and ran as they always do as a team. Those that didn't have a good race, others made up for it."

In the boys race, Lake City junior Kyler Little won in 18:01, 35 seconds faster than teammate Jake Finney as the Timberwolves won a second straight regional title.

Riley Estes finished third, Jose Winton fourth and David Conway fifth for Coeur d'Alene, which also qualified its boys team to state.

Brianna Slattery qualified as an individual for the Post Falls girls.

4A: Cooper Haney finished fourth in the boys race in 19:41 and Delany Gorton seventh in the girls race in 24:04 for Lakeland to qualify for state.

Sandpoint swept the boys and girls team titles.
